We Love Fall!

* Night Sky *

The past few weeks we have been studying the night sky. We have learned about stars and constellations, meteors, the moon and it's phases. To go along with some of our writing the kids painted a moon using bubble art. We had so much fun. They experimented with different size bubbles and decided that the bigger the bubbles the cooler the "craters"for their moons, (and the more paint that got on your face, which became a contest in itself.) The final product was then added to their beautiful Moon Poetry.

Next, we created the phases of the moon with cookies. YUM!
The students opened their cookies and cerated the phases by shaping the filling in the middle.  They had to put the cookies in correct moon phase order beginning with New Moon which happens when the moon is directly between the Sun and the Earth. Here are the phases and what they look like. (In cookie form.) The phases of the moon, that they are trying to show are: New moon, waxing crescent, first quarter or half moon, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, waning quarter or waning half moon,  waning crescent, new moon.

October - Begin With the End in Mind

It is October and students are working on Habit #2 Begin with the end in mind. Everyone in our class has set some goals which we would like to accomplish by the end of the year. This month we have been studying the Earth's rotations, and the night sky. We learned about Columbus and that he used the stars to help him navigate. We had some fun with mini ship races and experimenting with their sails.

 Oh, and we are already more than half way to our "Smarty Party"!

School Is Underway!!!!

A new school year is underway and I am late getting our class blog started. Already we have done a ton and learned a LOT. Here is an overview to try and catch us up. In September we focused on Habit #1 Being Proactive We also talked about Johnny Appleseed and how he was an all around "Good Apple". The kids talked about how they can be "good apples" too.

September and the beginning of October we studied the weather and how and why we have different seasons. We made some awesome clouds and precipitation in a jar. (Which they are wanting to recreate because we didn't get pictures of. Hopefully we will get a chance to add an update)  The kids did a super job on their Season Presentations.
